It's a shocking fact -- bad posture can
contribute lead to life-threatening disorders.
For example - posture effects and moderates every body function from breathing to hormonal production. This has been shown in science.
Good posture is good for longevity.
Bad posture is constant pressure thats gnaws away at your health potential.
One of the commonly seen presentations of bad posture at our clinic at SpineCentral, Hampton is Forward Head Syndrome.
It's far more common than you think.
"But wait up!" you might say. "My head leans forward. What's the problem?"
Imagine this: the average human head weighs approximately 5 kg (11 lbs).
So, imagine I ask you to stand with your back against the wall. One arm raised and extended fully at shoulder height - as if pointing away from your body.
Here - now hold this 5 kg kettle-bell weight in that hand of your extended arm. That's it. And hold the weight with that outstretched arm for as long as you can.
I'll stand here with you for the next few minutes because after those short minutes you will notice the muscles in that arm will begin to 'burn'.
The whole arm will feel tired. Sore even. And by about five minutes (if you last that long) you'll be ready to let go of the weight for some instant relief.
That's exactly what is happening with your forward head (of 5 kg) posture.
Who knows what strain and pain that is causing your body???
The medical term for this inbalanced state is DYSPONSESIS - Which essentially means 'mispent energy'. You are working harder than you need to.
The important point is this; you only get a finite amount of energy for all of your bodies needs. If you spend more on keeping your body upright against gravity, there is less energy to spend on other needs.
